What do I need to Get started ?
That all depends on the question I have , "How often do you wish to do laundry?"
It also depends on which diapering system you choose to use.
No matter which you choose as babies
get older you will need to use less.
Newborns - from about 4-9 months
old you should plan on having about 12 diapers for each day of laundry. This means if you want to do laundry every other day
, you will need about 24 diapers.
Infants - From
about 4 - 9 months you should plan on having about 8-10 diapers a day, for each day of laundry.
Toddlers - From about 9 months and up you should plan on having at least 6-8
diapers a day for each day of laundry.
Covers - For newborns I recomend having a cover for every 4 diapers so if you have 24
diapers you will need about 6 covers. ( If you breast feed you may need more as most times you
nurse the baby tends to have a BM.) For All other ages you will need about
2-3 covers per each day you do not want to do laundry.
Fleece covers -
These are great for a breathable system . Many choose to use these at night time
for an added protection. These can go a few times between wearings , they do not need to be changed everytime, depends on
how wet and how long you go between changes.
Diaper inserts -
You will need about 1 per diaper . These are great for extra protection.
Diaper
Pail - You are going to need some sort of pail, there are many suitable type containers at most stores. Even Home Depot.
I also highly recomend Bummis diaper pail liners, these make it much easier to dump diapers into the wash and help keep the pail clean, you just throw the liner in
with the wash. ( having 2 will give you one to wash and one to have in the pail) We carry these in 2 sizes.
Wet bag - It is very nice to have a wet bag for carring your soiled diapers when you go out. A plasitc
bag will do but Bummis has a nice water proof bag in 2 carring sizes in different colors. We carry these also .
Diaper
Liners - At this time we do not carry these at this time. They can be useful to have and make soiled diapers ever easier
to clean.
Diaper Cloth Wipes - You need a least 24 of these. I use mine as my all in one wipes for abys face too.
I add these to my solution as I need more. ( I think I have aout 40 of them.) But you can do with 24.
What if
I travel ? - Then you can still use cloth diapers. It is silly to think if you go out , you will need a disposable.
When you travel, use your Bummis wet bag ( or a palstic grocery bag) store this in your diaper bag. For soiled diapers, I
try to dump what I can in a toliet but if not possible , change baby and roll it into your bag. ( Bummis wet bags seal
tight) . They carry 2 sizes . ( so if it is a longer trip, take the over night size. ) I even pack
my cloth wipes too. All you need is a zip lock bag, or the comercial huggies travel one. My wipes are cut to fit in that.
I use the wipe and throw it in my wet bag. When I get home , I dump it all in my pail and wash the wet bag for the next time)
.
One time a woman asked if I can spot her a few wipes as she was out, I handed her my cloth ones, reluctantly
she accepted them, with a face. She loved them. She actually talked about getting into cloth diapers after
that. ( do not know if she did)
No, I didnt touch her used wipes, she place them in my bag and
they were dumped into my pail and washed. No biggy)
