Using or making Cloth pads

Making or using cloth pads

Making your own pads - This is pretty easy! All you need is some cloth and a sewing machine.  IYou can use a pattern which you my  obtained from www.candleonthehill.com . This is a simple pattern, they also sell the materials you will need.

Choosing your materials - Using my chart for diapering materials you can choose to use any of the materials listed. Flannels being the cheapest and organics being more expensive. Terry toweling makes a good inside soaker.  I like to use Pro-care or Pul for the water proof layer but some of the fleeces you get at diaper shops will work also.  You will find that if you wish to use organics and special materials you will need to go to places like www.candleonthehill.comwww.sewshoppe.com , www.diapershop.com  or may favorite www.wazoodles.com .

Why would I want to even use Cloth Pads?

Recently they have discovered the use of some of the chemicals in the modern pads ( with the exceptions of the organics) may cause endorcine disorders.

How many pads would I need?

This depends on how often you are going to want to wash them.  Usaually , 12 is enough.

How do I wash and care for these pads?

When you first get them they should be washed a few times before using, this actually makes them more absorbant .  Purchase a nice med. bucket with a lid. This is where you will place them when they are dirty. (always make sure lid is snug to keep children from getting into it)  .  Fill this with cold water and toss your pads to soak in this. Change your soak water daily, (dump down toliet , do not let the pads get flushed)  then refill with cold water. This soaks out the blood. When your ready for washing , just throw them in with like colors,  be sure not to use bleach with your pads and softners make them less absorbant.  I usaully throw them in with the daily towels as I do 2 loads of thoes a day with my size family.

How Long will my pads last?

Your pads should last for as long as a flannel diaper or shirt would. That could be quite awhile.
